Suggested Packing List
Please consider the (*) items for your day pack.
Clothes
- *Jacket and/or sweatshirt (good for layering - the temperature changes rapidly through the day)
- Light colored, long or short sleeved shirts. Long sleeves provide more UV protection.
- Comfortable walking shorts and jeans.
- Hat
- Closed-toe, comfortable walking shoes (This is a safety issue when you visit the telescopes or observe at night).
- Rain jacket/shirt/pancho* (let's hope these aren't necessary!)
- Warm socks
Other
- *Back pack/day pack for carrying materials and personal items to the Observatory each day. We have large “cubby holes” in the classroom for your things; however, they are not lockable.
- *Personal toiletries
- *Water bottle
- *Important medications
- *Skin moisturizer - the Davis Mountains are inside a desert region where humidity gets below 10%.
- *Sunscreen - more UV at the Observatory's 6800 ft elevation.
- *Lip balm with sunscreen
- *Flashlight with extra batteries. The Gift Shop does not sell batteries.
- *Binoculars - excellent for scanning the night sky and/or daytime use, but are not a requirement.
- *Small snack items that do not require refrigeration.
- Bath towel (if you want an extra one)
- Pillow and blankets (not required, but may make you more comfortable away from home).
- Personal telescope (not required) - only if you have one already and want to bring it.
- *Your school, district, or state science standards for the grade and/or subject(s) that you teach.
